- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
It's exciting times for ex-Larry Cherubino Head Winemaker Imogen Dillon. This is the first release of her own label, the 2016 Pinemount Syrah. She fell in love with the Yarra Valley when moving to Victoria in 2015, it made sense for the Yarra to be the homebase of her own label. This Syrah comes from a single vineyard in Yarra Glen. There were 30% whole bunches in the ferment. Only a small amount was bottled after 8 months in oak. It's a sleek and elegant release to kick things off for Imogen. An expertly crafted wine, nicely executed.
What it Tastes Like
Fresh, vibrant blue fruited Shiraz/Syrah replete with pretty, floral highlights on the nose and and exotic spice. Pepper and star anise, flavours lead to a spicy finish. Delicious stuff.
94 points. "Vines planted '98, hand-picked, whole berry wild yeast open-fermented with 30% whole bunches, 24 days on skins, matured for 8 months in French puncheons (40% new). Full, deep crimson-purple; the bouquet (and colour) start the ball rolling in a direction the full-bodied palate doesn't deviate from; satsuma plum, dark cherry and savoury/herbal/forest floor notes an undercarpet for the fruit and French oak. Needs time to relax and open its fierce grip. Great label graphics." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
An attractive bouquet of bright red fruits, cassis and background spice compliment and contribute to the overall character of this wine. The rich yet savoury palate is focused and refined showing forest floor flavours and soft velvety tannins. This wine will continue to open and develop over the next 5-10 years. The Syrah has been hand picked from a Single Vineyard Site in the Yarra Glen area of the Yarra Valley. The grapes were cold soaked for 10 days before the onset of a natural fermentation. I used 30% whole bunches in the ferment to give another dimension to the wine and to create some lovely depth in the mid palate. Once the wine was sugar dry, it was transferred to large format oak where it matured for 8 months before going to bottle.

About the Producer
This is Imogen Dillon’s solo project. After working for the likes of Larry Cherubino and Tom Carson at Yabby Lake, she is striking out on her own with this small range of hand made wines from the Yarra Valley. Her wealth of experience and sturdy hand in the winery clearly shining through in this detailed and refined set of wines.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
