- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Oliver's Taranga team are making a compelling case for the future of Italian varieties here in Australia. Their Fiano was one of the first wines from this grape to gain some widespread traction and appeal, and with more and more examples popping up each vintage, Corrina Wright - one of the most vibrant winemaking personalities in the Vale - has managed to keep their version at the front of the pack. The fruit for this wine is grown on their Taranga vineyard in McLaren Vale. It's a wine with weight and structure but also perfume and vibrant fruit. McLaren Vale is rapidly becoming this grape's home away from home and Corrina's is still one of the best around.
What it Tastes Like
"Bright welcoming straw-green; the bouquet has the wild flower/bush/pine aromas seen in other Australian fianos, the palate following suit with a strong, racy structure embracing both savoury and fruity nuances - I'll buy Olivers' suggestion of kaffir lime. A mouthfilling wine with attitude and natural acidity." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

Our 2016 vintage had a very dry and warm lead up, but a lovely rain in early February and the following cool spell allowed the grapes to ripen perfectly. This minimal intervention Fiano is made with indigenous yeast, has no added acid and is made without the use of oak.

About the Producer
The Oliver’s Taranga story is one that is becoming more common amongst the new wave of brilliant boutique producers - generations worth of growing grapes for the purpose of sale to other wineries, before finally diving into the winemaking and marketing themselves. It makes sense to start with the vineyard rather than the final product, and Oliver’s Taranga are making a great fist of things.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country. It makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris which is far better suited to the Australian climate.
