- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This is Taras's answer to Amber's Pinot Noir Home.... If hers is the feminine, this is the masculine; the dark to her light, the beast to her beauty. The process is pretty simple, as Taras says, "I just take all the whole bunches, squash it up a bit, do bugger all". The vineyard is super late ripening, he just lets it hang out there on the vine for as long a possible. This hands-off approach gives the wine a very visceral quality, it's not refined like Amber's, it feels a little wild. Just 100 dozen produced and really captivating drinking.
What it Tastes Like
_93 points. "“Impeccable disorder”, what a great name for a wine. From an organically farmed vineyard in the Picadilly Valley. Spice, stalks, sarsaparilla, poached cherry and amaro herbs. It’s big and bold, distinctly spicy and almost tonic-like in its delivery of savoury/dried herb/orange peel adult flavour. Tannin waves in sheets, and the acidity is clean and trimming. Such charisma. It’s vermouth v Pinot, and all the better, and more interesting for it." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
The term “rockstar winemaker” gets thrown around a lot these days but Taras Ochota, owner/purveyor of cult wine label Ochota Barrels, is the real deal. His grungy, minimalist attitude towards his label has seen him gain huge cult status internationally as one of the most boundary pushing “conceptual” winemakers in Australia.
From his home in the beautiful Basket Range of the Adelaide Hills, Taras and his wife Amber craft small batches of wine from surrounding vineyards in the Hills and special sites across McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. These are highly sought after and extremely limited wines which have a pulsating energy and drive to them. Some of the country’s most exciting wines, no doubt.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
