- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
This is the outlier in the Ochota Barrels range. The only wine Taras is not allowed to touch. This is Amber Ochota's baby. When his kids' GP asked Taras if he would like the fruit from his home vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, Taras jumped at the chance. The Pinot vineyard is about the size of a tennis court, not much fruit, not much margin for error. Amber took this as her project and made the wine the way she wanted too and despite Taras telling her at every turn what she 'should' be doing, she ignored it all. 100% whole bunches and left to sit and macerate for some time without a single hand touching it. It drove Taras crazy, but as they say, the proof is in the pudding. This is goooooood pudding. So good that Taras now copies her way of making Pinot, and he says that all his friends think that Home... is their best wine. Only 404 bottles made and a totally charming small batch Pinot.
What it Tastes Like
_94 points. "Fine, fragrant and laden with incense and exotic spice, stalks, strawberry and cherry. It’s light and playful, with a lick of kitten’s tongue tannin, cool fresh strawberry acidity, and an amaro herb laced finish of fine length. Great personality and loads of charm. What a great wine." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

This vineyard is a mix of clones taken from the Ashton Hills vineyard 20 years ago. The size of this organically farmed vineyard is similar to that of a tennis court. Handpicked by our family in two hours. Made entirely by Amber Ochota. 100% whole bunch. Basket pressed. No additions or filtering. Gravity racked to bottle. Label photo by Amber taken from her bike of a poppy field on the track to the winery in the southern Swedish town Simrishamn.

About the Producer
The term “rockstar winemaker” gets thrown around a lot these days but Taras Ochota, owner/purveyor of cult wine label Ochota Barrels, is the real deal. His grungy, minimalist attitude towards his label has seen him gain huge cult status internationally as one of the most boundary pushing “conceptual” winemakers in Australia.
From his home in the beautiful Basket Range of the Adelaide Hills, Taras and his wife Amber craft small batches of wine from surrounding vineyards in the Hills and special sites across McLaren Vale and the Barossa Valley. These are highly sought after and extremely limited wines which have a pulsating energy and drive to them. Some of the country’s most exciting wines, no doubt.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
