Yarra Valley Pinot Noir doesn't get much more deliciously approachable than the Over The Shoulder Pinot Noir made by Dave Bicknell. The fruit for the 2016 comes from vineyards across the Yarra Valley, including Gladysdale, Woori Yallock and Coldstream. Once in the Oakridge winery, it was fermented as whole berries for three weeks for maximum perfume and vibrancy, Bicknell looking to capture the essence of the Yarra each vintage. He's done a great job on the 2016. For what is essentially the 'entry level' wine into the exceptional Oakridge red wine range, the quality is remarkable. Campbell Mattinson said, "This one goes straight into the ‘buy’ column.", good advice to the Yarra Pinot fans, this is a steal.
What it Tastes Like
"It’s not overly expensive but as soon you put it near your nose/mouth all thoughts of price go out the window. It smells and tastes real, varietal, inviting and more. It’s sweet-sour, slightly herbal, smoky, sinewy. It’s light in a good way. It rushes through the mouth but then lingers through the finish. The stated alcohol seems high but I didn’t notice it in the wine; all I noticed was how much I wanted to keep going back for more." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
94 points "Sourced from vineyards at Gladysdale, Woori Yallock and Coldstream. The perfumed red fruits of the bouquet are enticing, the fresh light to medium-bodied palate likewise. While intended for early consumption, 4-5 years' cellaring will see a burst of spices and dried flower petals appear. Excellent value; this was a great pinot vintage." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 91 points. "This one goes straight into the ‘buy’ column. About the Producer
Oakridge is one of the Yarra Valley’s most respected wineries. Under the direction of master winemaker Dave Bicknell, it has been a major player in defining the modern styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Yarra over the last decade. From the elite 864 range to the amazing value Over The Shoulder range, there’s quality at the core of everything Oakridge puts its hand to.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
