A brilliant example of the rising quality of Australian Rosé here from the hands of 2016 Jimmy Watson Trophy Winner, Julian Langworthy.
The Nocturne Nebbiolo Rosé was made from a single vineyard in Margaret River. The fruit was hand picked specifically for Rosé, then whole bunch pressed to barrel for 10 weeks before being settled and bottled.
Julian is going for a more architectural style of Rosé with this wine. Something inspired by the pink wines of Bandol that can develop with time in bottle. Gary Walsh saw the potential in his 94 point review, concluding, “It’s so vinous and flat out delicious.”
This is a delightful Rosé with a serious edge.
What It Tastes Like
“Cherry and the discreet perfume of a fine rosé. Light bodied, softly softly tangerine acidity, chalky texture, subtle earthiness and a long fresh finish, maybe some almond and fennel. It’s so vinous and flat out delicious.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

2016 was pretty idyllic for rosé production. Light, fine flavours became present in the fruit at low sugar levels allowing expressive, generous wines with the alcohol nicely in check. This is a 100% single-site wine from the Lentondelle Vineyard in the Carbanup subregion of Margaret River. It’s a flat, warm site with fertile, red sandy soils. The fruit was picked by hand on 3rd March at what would generally be considered perfect Chardonnay numbers. It was whole bunch-pressed directly to old oak for fermentation as per high-end chardonnay production. The juice was fractionated into free-run and pressings but ultimately all of the fractions were used in the final blend. Fermentation was wild and no additions were made to this wine at all. After 10 weeks unsulphured in oak on gross lees, the wine was emptied from barrel, then settled, filtered, sulphured and bottled. We’re extremely happy with the resulting wine. The texture and phenolic structure are highlights for us. We feel that, although extremely different from Bandol, this may be very ageworthy in a similar vein. That said, drink it on a boat, wearing white. – Julian Langworthy Baumé: 12.1; Alcohol: 12%; pH: 3.2; Total acidity: 8g/L

Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
