- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
A brave new project from winemaker Nick Spencer here, stepping away from the renowned Eden Road wines and on to his own endeavour. This is the first release of a Chardonnay under Nick's own eponymous label. The fruit comes from Tumbarumba. Nick has made Chardonnay from this region for a decade now, he believes that 2016 vintage has produced the best fruit he has seen. This doesn't have the flashy oak and sulphide aspects which often characterised his critically acclaimed Chardonnays at Eden Road, this is a gentler, more streamlined version of the variety which showcases the purity of fruit from this cool NSW region. "This is Tumbarumba in a bottle." - Nick Spencer
What it Tastes Like
Bright golden fruit only a touch of oak and subtle oatmeal notes. Touches of slate in this slipstream of Chardonnay fruit. It has a gentle mouthfeel, it's a calm wine with lovely minerality. Elegence is its middle name. It’s a Chardonnay that whispers where it’s from. Cool. Classy. Effortless and precise.
95+ points "Mixed citrus, apple in oatmeal dusted with cinnamon, whisper of fennel and flowers. Light bodied, delicate and fine, but flavoursome too, with more of that oatmeal in with crunchy white fruits and citrus. Brightly lit with pure acidity, gentle chalky texture, and a green olive and lime laced finish of impeccable length and precision. Gee, this is good. Scintillating Chardonnay." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

TASTING NOTES TUMBARUMBA HOLDS A VERY SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART. THE LANDSCAPE IS NOT ONLY AESTHETICALLY BEAUTIFUL BUT ALSO PRODUCES SOME OF THE BEST CHARDONNAY IN THE WORLD. THE 2016 VINTAGE MARKED MY 10TH YEAR PRODUCING WINE FROM TUMBARUMBA AND IT IS IN MY OPINION THE BEST I HAVE SEEN FROM THIS ALPINE REGION. THE WINE IS LIVELY AND BRIGHT WITH LOVELY CITRUS AND STONE FRUIT CHARACTERS. THERE IS AN INTENSITY AND ENERGY TO THE PALATE THAT IS AS MUCH FAMILIAR WITH A YOUNG RIESLING. THE FINISH IS BRIGHT, ELEGANT, LONG AND CRUNCHY. THIS IS TUMBARUMBA IN A BOTTLE.

About the Producer
Nick Spencer Wines
Nick Spencer made a name for himself after a hugely successful decade-long stint as chief winemaker at Eden Road, before deciding in 2017 to take the plunge and start his very own label. The Nick Spencer wines are, like Eden Road’s, focused on the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular Tumbarumba and Gundagai. With Nick’s access to some of the region’s best fruit, his wines are all about balance, style and drinkability, with Nick’s stamp of quality on top. Tiny volumes made and an exciting producer to watch out for!
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
