- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Here, Ngeringa winemaker Erinn Klein tries her hand at a new wine from 2016. This is her first release of a Pét-Nat and it’s a ripper.
The ancient sparkling wine style of Methode-Ancestral is leading to some very interesting new Australian wines: no rules and no preconceptions means winemakers are free to explore. This is a blend of 25% Chardonnay, 25% Viognier, 25% Pink Semillon with a splash of Pinot Gris and Gewürztrminer.
It’s a lightly spritzy, rustic and playful wine. Super aromatic and full of charm. Terrific drinking and a great first effort from Erinn.
What It Tastes Like
Zesty and zingy, with a fine spritz. There’s some crunch to the acidity which is balanced nicely by the cloudy/chewy characters at its core. Some grapefruit, some floral things, a slight cidery character. It’s all good. Very good. And very thirst-quenching.
Pétillant Naturel (Pet Nat) is essentially farmhouse champagne - sparkling wine made in the méthode ancestrale without the addition of extra yeasts or sugars. Made from five varietals grown across both Ngeringa properties: Viognier from the sparkling micaceous soils of our Nairne Iluma Vinyeard; Pink Semillon and Chardonnay from the easterly-facing slopes of the Summit Vineyard; and Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer from the small original home vineyard, Ollie’s block.
25% Viognier, 25% Pink Semillon, 25% Chardonnay (sparkling base), 15% Pinot Gris, 10% Gewürztraminer. Aged for three months in old French barrels. Frozen Pink Semillon added back and fermented to dry. Wild fermentation, no enzymes, oxidative handling pre-fermentation, spontaneous malolactic fermentation, gentle extraction, warmer fermentation, minimal temperature control. No fining. Estate bottled. Small amounts of sulphites added before bottling.
Bottle Size: 750ml
Drink Until: 2018
About the Producer
Ngeringa is one of Australia’s pioneering biodynamic vineyards. The wines that winemaker Erinn Klein produces from their lovingly farmed site are pure and restrained renditions of cool climate wines. The farm is everything to the Kleins and it yields wonderful fruit alongside sustainably farmed produce. Theirs is one of the Adelaide Hills’ most important viticultural sites.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
