- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Murdoch Hill is a producer that should be on your radar, with young winemaker Michael Downer one of the real up-and-coming talents in the country. This Chardonnay might not have the pizzaz and funk of his 'Artisan' releases, it is however a perfect example of the excellent value Chardonnay that can be produced from the Hills. It comes from two different vineyards in the Adelaide Hills sub-regions of Lobethal and Piccadilly Valley, providing complexity, balance and depth to the final product. The 2016 is light and fresh feeling with just enough texture from barrel to keep things interesting. It's not super complex or thought-provoking but it's certainly going to hit the spot when you want quality Chardonnay that's nifty value.
What it Tastes Like
Citrus and white stonefruit are the main themes here. It's built around a core of pristine acidity, flavour draped over a line of crackling acid. There's a little richness from the barrel work but big ticket item is freshness. Geez it's good. No brainer for Chardonnay fans of many kinds.
92 points. "White peach, ripe grapefruit, white chocolate, spice and mint, with a little flick of struck match. Medium bodied, juicy flavour, almost to lime juice acidity and flavour, a little flint and chalk, good intensity and length. Satisfaction from start to finish. Spot on." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Premium vineyards from the Lobethal district and the Piccadilly Valley were selected for this Chardonnay. Each small parcel provides a different profile giving an overall complex wine, clonal material included Bernard clones 76,96 with parcels from I10V1 and sparkling clone G9V7. The fruit was hand picked then kept in cold storage at two degrees for several days. After, the whole bunch and whole berry pressings were sent straight to barrel with a mix of barriques and puncheons with 20% new oak. The juice was fermented naturally and encouraged to warm gently. Post ferment partial malolactic fermentation occurs where required to soften the often-high acidity.

About the Producer
Murdoch Hill is a family-owned winery captained by talented young winemaker Michael Downer. Downer splits the range in two: his clean-cut, consistently high-quality ‘Estate’ wines are excellent value and perpetually reliable, and his quirky, adventurous ‘Artisan’ wines which offer an alt-styling and different shades of the region. With the combination of high-quality Adelaide Hills fruit grown on the family estate and the undoubted talent in the winery, this is a Hills producer on the up and up!
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
