Michael Downer has revitalised his family winery Murdoch Hill, since taking hold only a few short years ago. The 'Artisan' range of wines are exploratory adventures into uncharted territories for Michael as he uncovers the potential of each variety he works with. The Sulky Blanc is a blend of 50% Riesling, 30% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Pinot Gris. Here he fermented the Riesling as three separate batches, carefully tracking the development of each, seeking out interesting developments in texture or flavour. Some skin contact, some fermenting in old barrels, anything to uncover some unique characteristics. The final blend is seamlessly put together. Michael says it's a wine built for daytime drinking, and he is absolutely right. It's slick, a little wild and totally enchanting.
What it Tastes Like
Soft delicate perfume of apple blossom, lemon pith and poached pears. Super texture and weight, pears, apples, bit of mineral crunch. Some bitter grip through the finish and nicely integrated acid. Drives smooth through the finish.
This textural aromatic Blanc is comprised of Riesling from Macclesfield, Sauvignon Blanc from our estate vineyard in Oakbank and Pinot Gris sourced from Lenswood. 25% of this wine was fermented on skins for 1-2 weeks with the Riesling and Sauvignon components adding textural and structure to the wine. The Pinot Gris was sent to older barriques to again build texture and softness to the wines. Overall 50% of the components spent some time in older barriques.
