- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Watervale region of the Clare Valley is one of the few places in Australia where one can make a desert wine with the acidity to give it both freshness and longevity. Mount Horrocks winemaker Stephanie Toole is one of the masters of the style, her impeccable Clare Valley Riesling fruit acting as the perfect conduit to carry off a complex wine in this style. Made in only small amounts. Sticky fans will find great pleasure here.
What it Tastes Like
"In excellent form. Oranges, cumquats and limes drive seductively through the palate; intensity on the wine’s side; so too length. Boasts more character than you might expect." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

‘Cordon Cut’ refers to the unusual practice of cutting the canes allowing the grapes to raisin naturally on the vine. The process naturally concentrates both flavour and sugar levels. Stephanie’s decision when to pick is based on both appearance and taste. Intimate knowledge of the process, rather than technical analysis, is critical. The Mount Horrocks Cordon Cut 2016 was harvested from mid March to early April. A number of ‘passes’ were made, each fermented separately and fermentation halted when Stephanie determined the flavour to be right, with considerable residual sugar remaining.

The Clare Valley knows what it does, and does it very, very well. Riesling and Shiraz are the rockstars of the region and with some of the most famous wines in the county coming from this small pocket of SA, the Clare’s reputation for quality only grows year on year.
Riesling is the king of white grapes. With unparalleled versatility, it rightfully carries the ‘Noble’ name tag. We make extraordinary Riesling in Australia, from far and wide. From the classic searing, razor-sharp styles in the Clare and Eden Valleys to the fragrant and enchanting wines of the Great Southern, Australian Riesling is a chameleon that can take on many forms. Sweet, steely, lean or textured, the world of Riesling is a thing of wonder that should be explored by all true lovers of wine.
