- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Pinot Gris on Skins project is Kate McIntyre MW’s pet project at family winery, Moorooduc in Mornington Peninsula.
The region as a whole has championed the Pinot Gris variety as something more than just a simple, easy drinking white. The McIntyre’s are the latest to get behind this regional hero.
This spent two weeks on skins before being pressed to barrel where it underwent MLF and hung out for 10 weeks on lees. It’s made like Pinot Noir as opposed to traditional Gris/Grigio.
The result is a wine more red than white. It’s fuller bodied than most Rosé wine, with serious tannin and weight. If you want to see the more interesting side of Pinot Gris, this is it.
What It Tastes Like
“Watermelon pink in colour with aromas of rose petal, red berry fruit and some Campari notes. Lovely perfume and fine tannins on the palate – fresh and bright on the finish. Drink cool but not chilled to best enjoy the unique floral aromas and tannic texture. Enjoy with smoked meat/charcuteries and cheese, or with a really good margarita pizza or pasta with tomato passata.” - Kate McIntyre MW
The 2016 Vintage.
Another lovely vintage, generous in style and quality. The even conditions this vintage lead to wines of power and structure, with a lovely core of fruit.
Winemaker: Richard McIntyre Viticulturist: Hugh Robinson
Hand harvesting Destemmed and fermented on skins (14 days total) Pressed to barrel (2-3 year old French oak) natural MLF in barrel in Spring 10 months in wood on lees with 1 racking prior to bottling Unfined and unfiltered
The fruit from this wine comes from the Osborn Vineyard, approximately 5 km south-west of Moorooduc Estate’s McIntyre Vineyard, on the Mornington Peninsula. Because Pinot Gris is genetically related to Pinot Noir and has a lot of colour in the skins, when treated in the winery like pinot noir (fermented on skins) it becomes a very pale red wine. It is pink but not a rose. In fact it is the opposite – this is a red wine style made from white wine grapes – rose is a white wine style made from red wine grapes. Watermelon pink in colour with aromas of rose petal, red berry fruit and some Campari notes. Lovely perfume and fine tannins on the palate – fresh and bright on the finish. Drink cool but not chilled to best enjoy the unique floral aromas and tannic texture. Enjoy with smoked meat/charcuteries and cheese, or with a really good margarita pizza or pasta with tomato passata.
(Like red wine, it will throw a tannin deposit, and it is not cold stabilised (‘natural’ winemaking!) - if you do put it in the fridge it will produce ‘wine diamonds’ (tartrate crystals) - this is natural and not harmful in any way - so don’t worry!)

About the Producer
Richard and Jill McIntyre’s Moorooduc Estate is one of the gems of the Mornington Peninsula. Inspired by the great wines of Burgundy, they have developed their own reputation for producing extremely classy wines across the board.
The Mornington Peninsula has become a go-to destination for lovers of modern Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mornington’s perfect climatic conditions for producing these varieties has seen it become, in only a relatively short time, one of the premier regions for these varieties in the country. The wines are beautiful. The best examples are wines which show a restrained power. Both intensity and elegance. It’s a region which will continue to blossom and mature for many years to come.
Pinot Gris is a variety that can take on many forms. In one instance it’s crisp, racy and light as in the case of Pinot Grigio, the next it’s round and voluptuous, and sometimes it presents as pinkish or even red! This versatility makes it an incredibly interesting grape. It loves skin contact, it loves lees stirring, it loves anything a winemaker can throw at it, but always it will show lovely perfume, tasty fruit and excellent mouthfeel. It might just be the most underestimated white variety in the country.
