Hamish Young's first release of the Mada Wines Shiraz is a very seductive wine. The fruit comes from two vineyards in the Murrumbateman area, one providing incredible perfume, one contributing underlying power. Half of the fruit was fermented as whole bunches, some saw time in ceramic egg to maintain freshness, and only 20% new oak used in the maturation of the wine. This is the essence of silky, slippery Canberra Shiraz. A wine that oozes sex appeal. Hamish has not put a foot wrong since starting his own label in 2016, and this gorgeous Shiraz is yet another notch in his belt.
What it Tastes Like
Explodes from the glass with a mushroom cloud of ripe plum and boysenberry, pepper, violets, lavender and asian spices. Touch of greenery there too. It's a sweet, heady perfume with a 'come-hither' feel. Coaxes you in then slaps you in the face. The first sip slides down with the same sweet berried fruit flavours, finely etched graphite tannins and smoked meat flavour. Goes long. Goes deep. Lovely Shiraz with cool-climate feels.
93 points "Hamish Young’s solo project has me pretty darn excited. So far, a suite of wines that speak a slightly different dialect to the staples of Canberra regional wine regions, and with unfettered feel as the motif. This is a little more predictable, but no slouch in standard. Murrumbateman shiraz magic. Big dusting of pepper greets the drinker. So too a slight earthy quality, something speaking a touch of undergrowth and dried herbs. It’s an inviting, savoury perfume, with mulberry and black cherry underlying. The palate is more of the same. Dark, brooding, intense yet set to medium bodied. There’s spice, earth, herbs and dark fruit all jostling with a kind of meaty, charcuterie character, and it’s all just-so and lovely. Almost a silkiness to texture but for perky acidity and a light pucker to close. Very good shiraz. Or, dare I say, syrah, if you get my drift." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Blend of two vineyards. A northern Murrumbateman site sitting in a north facing valley. Its a pretty, perfumed site. Neil Mcgregor grows the fruit (not certified but he led the charge in CBR with organic/sustainable fruit growing). The other is just south of central Murrumbateman, in the Nanima Valley, it gets a good flow of warm air through the growing season…Really firm, powerful shiraz. 50% whole bunch. Mostly barriques, 20% new. Some time in Ceramic also to maintain fruit freshness. Nope, no viognier. Bright, perfumed lift really coming from the northern site. Otherwise all pretty straight forward. No need to muck around with fruit like this too much!

About the Producer
Mada wines sees ex-Eden Road operational winemaker Hamish Young venture out on his own for the first time. Sourcing fruit from some great sites across the Canberra and Hilltops regions, his first releases are of remarkable quality. This is a wine to watch for the future. Big things ahead of Hamish and Mada.
Canberra. A mountain of potential. A sleeping giant of Australian wine. The ability of this region to produce world class wines in only a relatively short history is almost second to none in the whole country. We have some absolute geniuses to thank for developing this region. People have taken notice. Canberra wine is some serious gear. With the ability to produce everything from perfumed and tightly wound Syrah, to razor sharp Riesling and a bunch of emerging varieties in the ground excelling, Canberra will be one of the ‘must watch’ wine producing regions in Australia for many years to come.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
