- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
“Alsatian” inspired blends are becoming more and more popular, as Australian wine lovers look for food friendly wines that match our eating culture.
Hamish Young’s first venture into this wine style is faultless. He’s shrewdly started with some very fine fruit from the Freeman vineyard in the Hilltops region. Each parcel of Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling was fermented separately to give himself complete control of the final blend.
The Gewurz hung out on skins for a week-long cold soak to, “draw out florals and really embrace the phenolics before pressing.”
This is one of the best put together examples of this wine style you are likely to find anywhere in the country.
With balance, zip and grip all in toe, this is a ripping wine.
What It Tastes Like
Beautiful aromatics of musk and Chanel No.5, lychee, quince. There’s sweetness to the fruit which is off set by a tart back palate. Clipped by citrus cleans things up nicely. Must be some time on skins, feels like the Gewurz is lending some grip. River rocks, japanese ginger and wasabi. Hard to imagine a better bottle to take along to a sushi train. Delish.
93 points “It’s a hard grape to get right, but I’d say this one has the sweet smell of success. It’s all musk sticks, ginger spice and lychee but has that extra zing of tangerine flavour and acidity. There’s a slight smokiness and whiff of Dettol (odd, but positive) to it along with a light grip and subtle orange peel bitterness to the finish. Gee, this would be good with Japanese or something like that. Delicacy with impact. Great drinking too.”

About the Producer
Mada wines sees ex-Eden Road operational winemaker Hamish Young venture out on his own for the first time. Sourcing fruit from some great sites across the Canberra and Hilltops regions, his first releases are of remarkable quality. This is a wine to watch for the future. Big things ahead of Hamish and Mada.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
