- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Mac Forbes Rieslings are built little differently to the average Australian Riesling.
Where most producers now-a-days look for bone dry Riesling as their style staple, Mac isn’t afraid of a little residual sugar. For him, it’s all about getting finding the best balance for each wine, and with the tight granite soils of Strathboogie giving the fruit an intense minerality, Mac feels a touch of R/S puts this nicely back in balance.
This is not quite an ‘off-dry’ style, the 13 grams of sugar that remains just gives a lovely fruit weight to the palate whilst maintaining freshness. It’s long, fine and full flavoured, something approachable now but that will definitely do well with some time in the cellar.
What It Tastes Like
Apple blossom, and honeysuckle notes mingle with sweet lime juice and zest characters for a scent that tickles the senses. There’s a stretchy feel to the fruit, is seems to expand and contract in the mouth. All tangerine, lime and sweet spice characters. Balance and precision. Delightful.

All our Rieslings in 2016 were crushed to the press and so remained until we felt the juice had built up enough tannin. Then this juice was pressed slowly to large old oak and sometimes tank where the wine remained without any additions other than SO2 until bottling in August. Time on gross lees with the phenolic back drop combined with the electric fruit profile has resulted in a series of wines that are only just beginning a long life of communicating Strathbogie in 2016.

About the Producer
If you love premium and artisanal Australian wine, Mac Forbes is a name you need to know. He’s not only one of the country’s most talented young winemakers, but he’s an influential spokesman for the concept of ‘terroir’, believing that wine should represent a time and a place.
Mac specialises in single vineyard Pinot Noir from the Yarra Valley. His wines are delicate and finely etched, characterised by subtlety and grace. His Chardonnays are loved by those who look for fruit purity rather than winemaking artifice in the variety, his array of off-dry Rieslings from the Strathboogie Ranges are some of the country’s most unique. And his ever-expanding range of experimental wines are a treasure-trove for the curious drinker.
Riesling is the king of white grapes. With unparalleled versatility, it rightfully carries the ‘Noble’ name tag. We make extraordinary Riesling in Australia, from far and wide. From the classic searing, razor-sharp styles in the Clare and Eden Valleys to the fragrant and enchanting wines of the Great Southern, Australian Riesling is a chameleon that can take on many forms. Sweet, steely, lean or textured, the world of Riesling is a thing of wonder that should be explored by all true lovers of wine.
