- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Never one to sit still, winemaker Luke Lambert has given the Crudo Rosé a facelift this vintage.
Where in the past it has been made as one of the ‘funkier’ Rosés in the country, this year Luke is going for ultimate drinkability. He’s also souced some new fruit for this wine, Shiraz from a 15 year old Upper Ngumbie vineyard which has added another dimension to this hugely popular wine.
The winemaking remains pretty much unchanged; the wine is fermented in oak, the lees worked throughout, bottled unfined and unfiltered.
This might be the most ‘smashable’ iteration of Crudo Rosé to date. If you’ve been a fan of this wine in the past, you’re going to love the 2016 version.
What It Tastes Like
Strawberry and a dusting of cinnamon. Juicy and bouncy in style, there a touch of sweetness which balances out the minerally acid nicely. Big gulps, here. Big glasses. Sunny days. Great stuff.
91 points. “Raspberry and cranberry, spice, with a nice crunch and bit of texture, juiciness and subtle savoury counterpoint, crisp and slightly earthy to close. Good drinking.”
- Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
Complex, textural, seductive yet vibrant and refreshing, this is pretty much everything you could hope for a bottle rose to deliver. It’s a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Denton Nebbiolo, whole bunch pressed with roughly a third of the juice fermented on full solids in old French oak; wild ferment & wild malo and aging on lees. Perhaps a little less funky than previous years - more juicy fruit driven - yet still plenty of ‘solids’ action for fans of the style. Bottled, as usual, without filtration.
What’s new this vintage is the Shiraz fruit, which now comes from a 15 year old Upper Ngumbie vineyard. What’s not new is just how damn delicious Luke Lambert’s rose really is. The new release is a more delicate wine than the 2015, with more talc, river stone, and strawberry lift. Glug away.

About the Producer
Luke Lambert is one of the young guns of the Yarra Valley. His wines are distinctly ‘old world’ in style, with his philosophy being all about wines reflecting their place and terroir, and of minimal intervention in the winery.
Contrary to many of his Pinot Noir-obsessed contemporaries in the Yarra, Luke focuses on Syrah and Nebbiolo as his flagship red varieties. He uses judicious amounts of whole bunch in his traditionally inspired winemaking, gently drawing out the very essence of the special sites he sources fruit from. There is little doubt Luke will continue to produce some of the region’s most exciting wines over the coming years, he is a future icon of this Victorian region.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
