Nic Peterkin's star is on the rise. He forms part of the New Guard of WA wine blazing a new trail for the West. With deep family roots in Margaret River wine and a lifetime spent surrounded by some of the finest examples of Margaret River Chardonnay, Nic has a keen eye for fruit and his own take on style for the great White grape of Margaret River. Here, Nic combines the forces of two very different Chardonnay vineyards to create depth, complexity and drive. The Jersualem's Grace Chardonnay is flashy, wickedly drinkable and as decadent as Chardonnay gets from this part of the world.
What it Tastes Like
This is funky, leesy, vanilla and spice infused peach and nectarine goodness. It's a little more slender and restrained than the previous release, a fraction tighter, but it delivers a big whack of Margaret River Chardonnay hedonistic delight. The fruit here is singing with the oak in perfect chorus. Great wine for Margaret River Chardonnay lovers.

Two opposing Chardonnay vineyards handpicked on the same day. One in Karridale (Jerusalem) 7 km south of Margaret River. and one from Karridale (Grace). Both vineyards are surrounded by large red gum forests with one vineyard grown on red gravel and clay, the other on gravelly loam. The vineyards were chosen for their inherent personality more than anything else. Jerusalem had been neglected for years, the (gin gin clone) Chardonnay vines had gone wild and to this day there are still large trees growing within the rows. They’re the kind of vineyards you enjoy walking through, you imagine yourself sitting on the deck of the little wooden shack on the property growing old, drinking wine amongst good friends. It’s a weird thing to say but vineyards like this seem to grow better fruit. Maybe because they are a little different and not so generic in the way they are grown. All I have to go on is the resulting wine, which I think is pretty special. The fruit once hand picked was cooled to maximise aroma and finesse. The grapes were then hand sorted to ensure only the highest quality fruit was let through to the press. They were then lightly cold pressed in whole bunches, very gently over a few hours. The juice was naturally fermented in French barriques (20% new) and left to mature for a further 10 months. During this time it underwent a partial secondary malolactic fermentation and was gently stirred fortnightly to create complex layers of texture. The wine was bottled into French glass unfiltered to maximise flavour.

Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine. The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.
Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. Nebbiolo, Touriga Nacional and Sousao, all finding a home amongst his eye-catching range. There’s some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space.
