- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
L.A.S. Vino stands for - Luck. Art. Science. The elements that Nic Peterkin believes go into making truly great wine. Here is a case in point. After a uni lecturer exposed him to some of the greatest Chenin Blancs in South Africa, Nic returned home to the Pierro estate where a young South African winemaker had just started working in the winery (Lucky!). After some beers, some gin, and more than a wine or two, they hatched a plan to create a Margaret River Chenin Blanc that was unlike anything ever made in this country. And he has gone for it. The CBDB (Chenin Blanc Dynamic Blend) is 96% Chenin Blanc and 4% Viognier. He has actively sought out some of the best, old vine Chenin in the region (and there's plenty around) to make this wonderful wine. With only 10 barrels made, this got the works. Cold soaked and basket pressed, fermented in old oak and in Clayvar before spending 11 months in oak and letting a portion go through malo for added texture (so, there's the Science). And finally, the whole thing is finished with a French bottle, and Czech glass stopper and crisp wax seal (And there's the Art). It looks wild and tastes it too but the enjoyment factor of this and the rest of the L.A.S. Vino range is through the roof.
What it Tastes Like
Sugared pineapple cubes, flint, mineral nose with pears dipped in wild honey. It has an easy complexity that it carries with it. Width of flavour but tension through the palate. Flesh and vibrancy. A lick of creaminess which gets pulled taught like a trip wire through the end. Compelling Chenin. Surely one of the country's best.
2016 CBDB (Chenin Blanc Dynamic Blend) The concept of this wine was born at University when a South African lecturer held a tasting of the best wines from his country. Prior to that most Australian Chenin Blanc I had tasted was sweet nothingness. This stuff was barrel fermented beauty in a bottle. I was hooked. I came back to the winery and we had just employed a young South African winemaker who was keen to prove himself. Over the coming months we drank some amazing Chenin; both French and South African. Most of the wines we make at L.A.S. Vino come about from nights of drinking epic wines (and beer) (and gin) and dreaming of how we can make our own incarnations that could knock peoples’ socks off. Wines that aren’t common, are different in form or style but still taste incredible. After that particular night of drinking the concept of CBDB was born. The fruit was hand picked in the early hours of the morning from a low yielding, thirty year old vines grown on gravelly loam soils in the heart of Willyabrup, Margaret River. Hand sorted and cold pressed as whole bunches the juice was left to naturally settle and then wild ferment. Once natural co-fermentation of the Chenin and Viognier began the wine was transferred to a combination of granite like vessels (Clayver) 30% old older French Oak 70%. The wine received a partial malo to increase complexity and then rested for 11 months with monthly lees stirring. The wine was bottled unfiltered. Nothing was added to this wine except a little sulphur to preserve and a little bit of natural clay to clear the wine.

About the Producer
Nic Peterkin’s blood runs red with Margaret River wine. The son of Pierro founder, Dr Mike Peterkin and Shelly Cullen, of you guessed it, Cullen wines fame, the force is strong with this one. His wines are out there, challenging the status quo of one of the country’s most respected wine producing regions. This is the “New Guard” of Margaret River, and the wines are coming out all guns blazing.
Nic is playing with some varieties off the beaten path of classic Margaret River. Nebbiolo, Touriga Nacional and Sousao, all finding a home amongst his eye-catching range. There’s some serious substance to his project, being named as the 2016 Gourmet Traveller Young Winemaker of the Year for his eclectic and tantalising releases.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
