About

The wines from Konpira Maru dance resolutely to their own drum beat. Alistair Reed and Sam Cook are making wines with a natural feel and a wicked sense of humour.

The El Pacu Chardonnay was grown on the Topper’s Mountain vineyard in New England and turned to wine in Jarod Dixon’s (Jilly Wines) winery. “Our modus operandi is minimal intervention to make wine that is really tasty and clean”, says Alistair.

It’s made with part whole bunch and skin contact, some oxidative handling to get things stable, then into bottle without additional sulphur. It’s a wine with a playful and easy-to-like vibe.

Mike Bennie scored it 91 points, concluding it was, “totally diggable gear for those seeking some wilder glances from chardonnay, or those seeking refreshment factor of a high order.”

Only 32 dozen made.

What It Tastes Like

“Here’s a wine that’s got some pep. Whiffs of nougat, oatmeal, lemon curd, oyster shells. The palate has that twang that says ‘mineral’ without being a specific one and that characters sits in the juicy, gently sweet freshness of lemon barley water cordial-like flavours. Plenty of texture to keep the palate dancing too – chalky edges, puffs of talc. Overall, totally diggable gear for those seeking some wilder glances from chardonnay, or those seeking refreshment factor of a high order.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
