- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Koltz Dog Day Shiraz is a great example of a more lively style of McLaren Vale Shiraz that is becoming more of the norm in the Vale. This is grown in Blewitt Springs. The lighter, more blue fruited Shiraz from this part of the region falls more into a medium bodied frame than the blockbusting styles that the region is traditionally known for. Gary Walsh was suitably impressed, his 93 point review wholeheartedly approving of this "Vibrant and almost fresh-faced expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz."
What it Tastes Like
"Floral, spicy, sweet new leather, plum and blueberry. Medium bodied, rich blueberry with some dried herb, tanin sits in the wine nicely, fresh and spicy finish of clean length and lip smacking satisfaction. Vibrant and almost fresh-faced expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz. I wasn’t sure if 92 or 93 points, but either way seems fine to me: it’s not rocket science you know." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Mark Day has spent more than 25 years as a winemaker in McLaren Vale and abroad. With his vast wealth obtained during his time in the industry, his labels, Koltz and Eccolo, reflect a slightly different side of McLaren Vale. They are wines ripened b the Australian sun, though made in styles influenced heavily by his time in Italy, specifically in Valpolicella. These are authentic and original wines made with Mark hands on philosophy.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
