- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Adventurous young winemaker Jared Dixon is taking the New England wine region in some interesting directions. Working with his fruit naturally, exploring unsung sites, it's an exciting development for the region. Jared's Rosé is comprised of Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and Gewürztraminer, fermented with indigenous yeasts in old oak. It's bright, fresh and near on impossible to put down. Mike Bennie rated this 93 points, saying that once it opened up, "it was unstoppable with its compulsion to skol." which is about as good as an endorsement as you are likely to find for any wine made in the crisp Rosé style. Only 87 dozen were bottled and it's in hot demand.
What it Tastes Like
"Bright, light garnet hue. Shows some of sauvignon blancs greener characters amongst red cherry and watermelon, Turkish delight sweet fruitiness. Palate is really lively and fresh-feeling, cherry and pomegranate juice yet finishes with a pucker of cranberry juice. It took a good couple of hours to hit its stride, and some air, but geez, when it did, it was unstoppable with its compulsion to skol. Crisp, delicious rose stylings." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points. "I think the correct name for this wine is ‘The White Wolf Of Cumbria 2016 by Jilly’. Fantastic names and fantastic labels from the reclusive Jilly Wines. Jared Dixon is the young, bold winemaker based in Clunes, NSW, with fruit being sourced from various good vineyards in New England wine region. The wines are made au naturel and in a fascinating array of styles. What a coup for this mostly unsung wine growing area. This here is a rose, of sorts, produced naturally fermented-barrel fermented pinot noir, sauvignon blanc and gewurztraminer. Light and fresh is the motif of this wine. Bright, light garnet hue. About the Producer
Jared Dixon is a lone ranger on his own mission in the New England wine region. His wines are made from interesting varieties grown on unique vineyards, sites he classes as ‘undiscovered gems.’ His winemaking is extremely hands off, allowing the full expression of the fruit to be the focus of every wine. The wines are fun and have a distinct energy about them. One of Northern NSW most exciting and impassioned wine prospects, no doubt about it.
No variety captures the hearts and minds of the wine lover quite like Pinot Noir. It’s the unicorn of many a winemaker. Notoriously fickle to grow, this delicate red variety can deliver a kaleidoscope of flavours and aromas, from the bright and floral to the moody and mysterious and everything in between. The cooler regions of Australia are where Pinot Noir is most at home. Look to Tasmania and Victoria for the best examples, with some quality wines beginning to show from the Great Southern and from the cooler parts of NSW. Falling in love with Pinot Noir can be a life long affair, beware the charms of this most enchanting of grapes.
