- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Jared Dixon is seeking out some interesting varietals to take the wines of New England to the world.
His Nebbiolo comes from the Topper’s Mountain vineyard, managed by gun viticulturalist Mark Kirkby. The fruit was fermented wild and spent 5 months on skins slowly macerating and softening before being hand pressed through a basket press.
This is a bright, lively Nebbiolo with structure and drinkability in equal portion. It’s ready to go now. With only 60 dozen made, this will be here one minute, gone the next.
What It Tastes Like
Striking nose of decaying rose petals, rosehip tea, sweet earth, and cherry. Wafts from the glass with purpose. Nebb to the core. In the mouth is where it really picks up speed. Juicy, glorious tannins smashed beautifully with the fruit. So good to drink now. A little colour development for such a young wine, but that’s all part of the charm. Cracking release for Nebb heads who want to get stuck into to something now.
91 points. “A unique expression of nebbiolo . not trying too hard, not trying to be different, you just get the feeling winemaker Jared Dixon wanted a lighter red from these grapes with just enough inherent structure, acidity and tannin you get from the variety. It’s cool. New England is the new black in New South Wales.
Big, big perfume of red cherry, maraschino cherry, pickled cherry, turbo charged! It’s got whiffs of saline character and green herbs, blanched almonds, rose petals too. Hi! Juicy, cherry jam-lite flavours, juicy, crunchy, with fine almond paste tannins, all fun and frivolous and vibrant. It’s well away from structured nebbiolo, but damn, it is FUN to drink.”

About the Producer
Jared Dixon is a lone ranger on his own mission in the New England wine region. His wines are made from interesting varieties grown on unique vineyards, sites he classes as ‘undiscovered gems.’ His winemaking is extremely hands off, allowing the full expression of the fruit to be the focus of every wine. The wines are fun and have a distinct energy about them. One of Northern NSW most exciting and impassioned wine prospects, no doubt about it.
Nebbiolo is one of the world’s truly great wine grapes. Most famously produced in the Italian regions of Barolo and Barbaresco, this king-pin of varieties is making a surge on Australian soil. A notoriously late ripening variety, Australian producers are constantly refining the way they grow this grape. Nebbiolo wines are light to medium bodied with incredible internal power and structure. These wines can live for decades when grown on the right sites. The classic descriptors of ‘tar & roses’ are often applied to this variety but the scope for complexity and nuance in the best versions is virtually limitless. The life of a great Nebbiolo as it matures through the years is one of the great wonders in all of wine.
