- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Ever on the hunt for something new, here, Jared Dixon, winemaker behind the Jilly label, takes on some of the alternative varieties thriving amongst the diverse viticultural sites in New England.
The 2016 Big Cats is a Portuguese-inspired red blend featuring Touriga Nacional, Tinta Cao and Tempranillo. These varieties complement each other wonderfully in this release, bringing slinky tannins and exotic spice to a medium bodied framework.
Jared’s soft touch in the winery has balanced this perfectly. Mike Bennie awarded it 93 points and with only 100 dozen made and the interest around Jared’s brand, Big Cats won’t be around for long.
What It Tastes Like
“Curious and great aromas of warm terracotta, sweet spice, Xmas pudding, dark berries and clove. Lovely stuff. Soft in texture with fine tannins finishing the wine in a dusty chomp. It’s bright and flavoursome, lively, interesting, actually very delicious, succulent and shows a scatter of herb and spice complexity. Geez, yum.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points. “Winemaker Jared Dixon makes wines out of Clunes (where?!) in New South Wales. Really marches to the beat of his own drum, Very expressive, interesting, unfettered, super delicious wines too. Haven’t spent too much time with these wines, but when I see them, I try and get a slug or two in. This is a blend of tinta cao, tempranillo and touriga nacional here. Small batch winemaking, with lots of care, and nothing added or taken away.

About the Producer
Jared Dixon is a lone ranger on his own mission in the New England wine region. His wines are made from interesting varieties grown on unique vineyards, sites he classes as ‘undiscovered gems.’ His winemaking is extremely hands off, allowing the full expression of the fruit to be the focus of every wine. The wines are fun and have a distinct energy about them. One of Northern NSW most exciting and impassioned wine prospects, no doubt about it.
