A unique and textural look at Riesling here from some of the country’s oldest Riesling vines from Yarra Valley winemaker, Gary Mills.
This is fruit from 100+-year-old vines in Great Western, whole bunch pressed and sent to old demi-muids for 8 months on lees. Mills looking for tannin and lees work to enhance the piercingly concentrated fruit these old vines deliver.
This is not the straight up-and-down, line and length Riesling that so many offer. This has more breadth, more width and an element of savouriness that is captivating.
What It Tastes Like
Here’s a Riesling for those who want more of a savoury style. This is brimming with apple, honeysuckle and grilled nuts. There’s a waxy note cut by bracing acidity. Mandarin peel and nuts galore. Chewy yet crackling with energy. Such an interesting style.
This Riesling is handpicked from the Garden Gully vineyard in Western Victoria which was planted in the 1890’s. The vines are low-yielding and are of unknown clonal origin and produce intensely flavoured high acid fruit. Handpicked and trucked to the Yarra Valley winery, the fruit is then whole bunch pressed and racked to large (800L) French muids and left to ferment with indigenous yeasts. After 8 months on lees the final wine bottled unfiltered and unfined.

About the Producer
Gary Mills is a rockstar of Victorian wine. His Jamsheed wines are amongst the most exciting in the country: thrilling, authentic wines packed with personality. Campbell Mattinson labelled him “a leading producer”, Jamie Good called him “the new face of Australian wine” and Matthew Jukes went as far as to call the wine of Jamsheed “a revelation”. With a specific focus on the regional differences in Victorian Syrah for his Jamsheed range, Gary has been one of the loudest advocates for the inclusion of whole bunch ferments and was ahead of the curve in creating minimal intervention wines that naturally convey the characteristics of their respective vineyards. Wild, electric and a little left of centre, Jamsheed is one of the Victoria’s most compelling producers.
History runs deep in Great Western. Some of the country’s oldest, most iconic producers have made a home for themselves here in the far West of Victoria. Shiraz and Riesling are the region’s most iconic varieties, but if you dig a little deeper, amazing examples of Pinot Meunier and other alternative varieties are waiting to be found. These are warm climate wines that maintain class and prestige.
