For Yarra Valley Chardonnay fans, there’s no better time of year than the release of the Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay.
There have been reams of praise written about this producer with regard to their unbelievable value, even invoking Campbell Mattinson’s claim that “It’s wines like this that made me want to get into the wine game in the first place.”
With no 1er wines made from 2016, all of the best Chardonnay fruit from the Hoddles Creek vineyard finds its way into the Estate release, making it, again, one of the best value wines in the country.
It has already received 93+ points from Gary Walsh. Here, the balance and intensity of fruit, the craftsmanship of the winemaking, all remarkable. The wines are never available for long enough, unfortunately, so get in while the getting is good.
What It Tastes Like
“Ripe grapefruit, peach, almond nougat, fennel, a dusting of spice, slight struck match. Light and fresh, good burst of peach and citrus, crunch of limey acidity, some flinty texture, and a gently viscous and nougat tinged aftertaste. It has length and flavour, and feels open for play straight away, though showed even better the next day. Like this a lot. Touch and go for 94 points.” - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Citrus and stonefruit on the nose, this wine has a rounded palate with good length and acidity; a light touch of new oak adds complexity.
All fruit is hand-picked in the morning and immediately de-stemmed and lightly crushed into the press. No enzymes are used; instead the juice is allowed to settle naturally. In 2016, there were approximately fifteen different ferments, these were allowed to start naturally on full solids. After a select period of time, some of the juice was inoculated with cultured yeast then transferred to wood for fermentation. The wine is then left on lees for approximately 11 months. Just before bottling all clones are blended, cold stabilized, fined and filtered.

About the Producer
Hoddles Creek lay a serious claim to being one of the best value producers in Australia. Led by the extremely hardworking winemaking guru Franco D’Anna, Hoddles craft wonderful Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in particular that seriously overdeliver at all price-points.
The wines are all crafted from fruit grown on their family owned vineyard in the Upper Yarra Valley. A must try for Yarra Valley fans and bargain hunters alike!
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
