- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Owned by brothers Richard and Malcolm Leaske and based in McLaren Vale, Hither & Yon crafts a unique range of wines from varying sites within McLaren Vale each year. The philosophy being to ideally match variety, vineyard and vintage and then without much intervention, let the wines truly express themselves.
The types of wines they’re putting forward are as exciting as the eye-catching packaging - Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Aglianico, Muscat Blanc and uniquely styled takes on your classic Rhone Valley and Bordeaux blends.
The Nero d’Avola is one of their most popular wines. Being a past winner of Best Wine of Show at the Alternative Varieties Wine Show, it’s been one of the country’s benchmark examples of the variety. It’s light, fresh and approachable nature makes it the perfect easy-drinking red. You can even give it a light chill - it’s the perfect Summer red.
What It Tastes Like
This is light and breezy version of Nero. Light-medium in weight, it’s flavours of crushed raspberry, purple jelly babies and black jelly beans. It’s simple in style and easy to like.
“Nero d’Avola is a Sicilian grape that has migrated happily to warmer parts of Australia and, in this incarnation, it is fruit driven, flavoursome and extremely pretty. An engaging all-purpose red with some herbal notes that would pair well with pizza, pasta or a good book.”
- Winsor Dobbin (Winsor's Choice)
The fruit was handpicked in the early morning of April 1 and delivered to the winery where it was then gently de-stemmed and crushed into open top fermenters. A cold soak took place for 5 days, with gentle hand plunging taking place 3 times per day. Fermentation was for 8 days, with a high portion of whole berries being retained, then lightly pressed to tank where the free run juice and pressings were combined Once the wine was dry, it was sent to 6-7 year old French barriques, all of the process to retain vineyard and fruit freshness. A light screen filtration, then bottling; completing the process on October 17, 2016.

About the Producer
Hither & Yon
Hither & Yon is one of the most exciting new producers we’ve come across. Owned by brothers Richard and Malcolm Leaske and based in McLaren Vale, Hither & Yon crafts a unique range of wines from varying sites within McLaren Vale each year. The philosophy being to ideally match variety, vineyard and vintage and then minimally intervene with the wines to allow them to truly express themselves.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Australian Nero d’Avola is one of the easiest-drinking red wines you are likely to find. This playful Sicilian variety is typically light to medium bodied, filled with jubey dark fruits and soft, silky tannins. It’s all about juicy drinkability with Nero. Though some cross the boundary into the area of ‘fine wine’, the majority are built to deliver maximum enjoyment as an early drinking style. Perfect for sharing with good friends and good food. The fact that it perfectly suits the Australian climate is just another tick in its box. Nero d’Avola is a variety that will play a big part in the future of Australian wine.
