- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Higher Plane Fiano is a good example of the high-quality Fianos currently coming out of Margaret River. It's a lighter framed, brightly fruited and deliciously moreish wine which quietly touts the suitability of this variety in this region. Made by Margaret River stalwart, Mark Messenger, this wine has been called "sophisticated", and "excellent" by Gary Walsh and Huon Hooke respectively. James Halliday going so far as to write that it, "typifies the best of Australian fiano" in his 94 point review. High praise for a wine of this price. Fans of the variety will find very good value in this release.
What it Tastes Like
"Wild flower blossom aromas explode into the bright, lively, textured palate that typifies the best of Australian fiano, lengthened significantly by crunchy acidity on the powerful, long finish." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
94 points. "Whole bunch-pressed, fermented in used oak. Wild flower blossom aromas explode into the bright, lively, textured palate that typifies the best of Australian fiano, lengthened significantly by crunchy acidity on the powerful, long finish." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion) 92 points "Very light colour. Clean, fresh, fruity scenty aroma, the palate likewise delicate, clean and fresh, fruit-driven and dry. Savoury style with an almost salty palate. Minerally, even. Lip-smacking dryness. Excellent wine and very appetising." - Huon Hooke (huonhooke.com) 91 points "Pale and light, struck match, subtle white flower high notes, green melon rind and citrus. It’s saline, fresh and crisp, subdued in fruit, but keen in texture, and tangy length. Very adult and sophisticated." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
The Higher Plane wines are made by Mark Messenger. These are excellent quality wines from Margaret River, grown on the estate vineyard located to the south of Margaret River township. The property was established in 1997 by Craig and Cathy with an aim to produce unique wines that speak of their little slice of the region. With the excellent critical acclaim they have received of late, it would seem that dream is being well and truly realised.
Margaret River is recognised as one of the country’s finest wine growing regions. The quality of the region’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay rival the very best in the world. But Margaret River is no two-trick-pony. There, Tempranillo and Malbec are excelling, Touriga Nacional seems to be quite at home, Chenin Blanc is getting serious and even pockets of Nebbiolo are rearing their heads. Watch this space. Who knows what new surprises are just around the corner from this famous region.
Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country. It makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris which is far better suited to the Australian climate.
