- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Fiano from Damien Stevens and Heart & Hunter offers something off the beaten track of traditional Hunter Valley Semillon.
This was inspired by Damian’s time in Campania, the natural acidity and texture of this variety capturing his imagination. The Hunter seeming like an ideal spot for this Italian upstart to thrive.
The 2016 Dr. B’s Fiano received 94 points from James Halliday and caused him to wonder, “Is there a new star in the Hunter sky?”
What It Tastes Like
“Is there a new star in the Hunter sky? This has freshness, purity and intensity, coming from the same forge as young, high quality semillon. It will be fascinating to watch the development of this (and subsequent vintages) over time.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

After spending 3 months during vintage of 2006 in Campania Italy, we discovered our love of Italian varietals including Fiano which originates from this area. Ever since we had been quietly dreaming about securing a small parcel from the Hunter, of which it is a relatively new variety. Being able to handle heat and drought conditions, the Hunter seems to suit this beauty, producing fruit of thick skins and good natural acidity.
Winemaker’s Notes From the very beginning of harvest the Fiano threw out this amazing aroma of fresh ginger which just permeated through the winery at different times. It’s just a delightful drink, being so fresh and aromatic, but with a lick of artefact and interesting characters if you are looking for them, originating from the cold soaking on skins. Textural with aromas of flint and warm biscuit, but finishing dry on the palate with hints of orange and pink musk.
Food Match We are enjoying the Fiano with garlicky vongole.
Cellaring A beautiful food wine to be drunk with joy now, but we expect it will cellar for the short – medium term.

The Hunter Valley is the home of Semillon in Australia. Arguably the best in the world, Hunter Semillon is one of Australia’s most truly unique wine styles. Add to that the fact that have been producing some of Australia’s best quality Shiraz for over a century and you can see why this is one of our most loved wine regions. But with a new generation of winemakers comes innovation. Now we are seeing risks being taken, new varieties being planted and some inspired winemaking which is writing a new chapter in the Hunter Valley’s rich history. We can’t wait to see what happens next.
Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country. It makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris which is far better suited to the Australian climate.
