- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Austrian Grüner Veltliner grape is one of the current ‘it’ varieties amongst wine lover circles. The Adelaide Hills region is where the variety is proving most successful, a fact that can be attributed wholly and solely to the inspired work of Hahndorf Hill guru Larry Jacobs.
Jacobs prophetically first planted the variety in the region in 2006, since then many Hills producers have followed suit. But the Hahndorf Hill GRU remains the gold standard of Australian Grüner. A clear benchmark for the variety.
The 2016 release sees Jacobs reach new heights with this wine. It is the first Grüner to be awarded 97 points by James Halliday, sitting it in exceptional company alongside the country’s most brilliant white wines.
If you want to see what this wonderful variety is all about, there is simply no better example in the country. This is outrageous value.
What It Tastes Like
“Six clones, handpicked at various baumes, each batch treated differently, some cool, some warm-fermented in stainless steel, 30% wild-fermented in old barriques with extended lees contact. The exceptionally complex vinification puts most winemakers of chardonnay to shame. It has electric vibrancy and drive, capturing your senses without warning. Its combination of delicacy, attention to detail and intensity is amazing. Gold medal Adelaide Wine Show ‘16.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

94 points “It’s more textural than crisp, though it still feels cleansing and/or refreshing. It feels seamless, svelte, inherently complex but not in a try-hard way. It’s flinty, peppery, savoury and then fruity. It sits in the glass and broods, at first, but then slowly unfolds. It has a rocky, quartz-like minerality. An earthen quality too. You have to slow down to appreciate it; it’s not really a wine of fireworks. But the quality is very high.”

Our GRU Gruner Veltliner was rated the best Gruner Veltliner in the world outside of Austria in the 2013 International Gruner Veltliner Tasting held by Falstaff magazine in Vienna. Now try the equally beautiful 2016 GRU! This frisky beauty has an enticing nose of citrus, spice and stone fruit with a wonderfully vibrant palate of stone fruit, grapefruit and an unctuous citrus core that is offset by a long, slatey mineral tail and the all-important gentle rub of texture. Perfectly matched with all Asian cuisine, white meats, sea-foods and vegetarian dishes. But most excitingly, here is the ultimate white wine that will match perfectly with your favourite rare sirloin steak! Gruner Veltliner is a variety that ages well and this wine should develop splendidly for between 7 - 10 years.
