- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Wild Gruner is part of Hugh Guthrie’s range of ‘concept’ wines. This range is about pushing certain varieties to their limits and exploring the full range of flavours and textures that can be created with creative winemaking.
The 2016 is a very interesting look at this Austrian variety. It takes the classic varietal notes of floral tones and white pepper to the next level.
After being destemmed and crushed, the fruit was fermented in old puncheons where it sat on solids for several months prior to bottling. Hugh is going for added grip and texture in this often neutral variety and this is a very successful example of just that.
What It Tastes Like
Green apple and a dusting of pepper. Fairly classic nose with some added layers of funk, vanilla and nuts. There’s so much more weight here than your average Gruner. It’s round and voluptuous with soft grip to it and a milky mid palate. Yummy stuff.
91 points. “Green and red apple, white pepper, daikon and some green herb. It has crunch and fair weight in the the mouth for a lighter wine, a dusty and white peppery texture, lemon juice coated apple, and a savoury almost yoghourt flavour in the aftertaste. Nicely done, and better, I think than the 2015. May or may not be a bit mousey, so if you’re sensitive to that, drop ten points off the score.”

WILD GRUNER The Wild Gruner is all about texture. Perfect handpicked bunches were crushed and destemmed. The berries then spent time on skins before gentle pressing to old french puncheons barrels. After a wild ferment the wine sat sur lie for several months before blending. The Wild Gruner displays all the classic characters of white pepper, citrus and apple. It has a beautiful milky texture with some welcomed grip.
