- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The cool climate of the Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills produces lovely tight versions of Chardonnay when in the hands of clever winemakers, such as Hugh Guthrie.
This fruit was picked from a single block in the quiet of morning, naturally fermented and allowed to go through natural malolactic fermentation. The result is a wine with lovely mouthfeel and a great balance between cool-climate tension and palate coating creaminess.
There is a lot of Chardonnay here on offer for the price.
What It Tastes Like
This Chardonnay shows some flinty and mineral notes, a little oystery, something even a ‘Chablis-esque’ to it on opening. But in the mouth and with a little time in glass it spreads far and wide. Richness building within the streamlined fruit. Creamy, honeycomby, gently chalky. Such personality at the price.
Single vineyard Chardonnay hand picked from a vineyard in the Picadilly Valley. The fruit was chilled overnight and whole bunch pressed to seasoned export french oak barrels (350L). The cloudy juice then under went a natural ferment with temperature peaking at 32 degrees centigrade. After fermentation was complete the wine was sulfered to prevent malolactic fermentation. The wine sat, undisturbed on fermentation lees for 11 months before being blended and bottled.

About the Producer
Hugh Guthrie is making some very smart wines from the Adelaide Hills. On one hand he offers excellent value classic styles of Chardonnay, Syrah and the like and on the other he gets a little experimental with some of the new European varieties becoming more and more popular. He delivers on both fronts. Lo-fi winemaking delivering delicious results.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
