What It Tastes Like
“As always, made using free-run juice, and fermented with a neutral cultured yeast, placing all the focus on the expression of variety and place. The bouquet is gloriously floral with sweet lemon blossom aromas, the palate with diamond-cut purity and clarity. Natural acidity is part of the DNA of this classic wine, underlining its spring day freshness.” - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

96 points. “Polish Hill is infused with a purity and drive that elevate it above the Clare Valley riesling plateau, and the 2016 season delivers it in tightly coiled lime and lemon, crunchy granny smith apple and a quintessential backbone of fine, slate-infused minerality. This is a vintage of precision and stamina, with a long future before it.”
- Tyson Stelzer (Tyson Stelzer's Australian and New Zealand Wines of the Year 2017)
96 points “Intense aromas of lemon and lime, a very fine, racy wine with great line and length. It’s a leaner wine than Springvale but still remarkably up-front and accessible already. The finish is refreshing and cleansing. A superb young riesling.”
- Huon Hooke (huonhooke.com)
95+ points “Blistering intensity, inward concentration, lace-work wrought with steel. It starts with evocative scents of lime, wet slate, frangipani, tonic water. The palate sets off with velocity but finds a light lime-and-tonic juiciness, slate-like minerality and crisp tug to fruit and acidity. No hair out of place. It’s epically long, furious in energy, beautiful drinking albeit austere right now. Total classic, elevated by a great year.”
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
The eight hectare Polish Hill vineyard (ACO certified organic) is at 460 metres altitude and is just five kilometres from Springvale. Its infertile, shaley soil is slightly acidic and its topsoil has a clay and shale crust. As the vines have to work harder than those at Springvale, it produces smaller, distinctly flavoured and concentrated berries.
It’s the explosive flavours of the Grosset Polish Hill 2016 that distinguish this vintage with power and tremendous intensity of flavour. The bouquet has lavender, a touch of lime and some minerally notes while the palate has surprising generosity, lime juice characters and some characteristic chalkiness. It is tight, uber-fine with steely structure, before a dry finish featuring pure natural acidity and hints of schisty mineralogy.
While there’s no doubting its longevity, there will be many who will love this Polish Hill in its youth.
