- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
When a couple of tonnes of biodynamically farmed Shiraz from Mt Barker in the Hills was offered up to Gareth Belton in 2016, he jumped at the chance.
This was fermented as whole bunches and sent to bottle as naturally as possible. No fining, no filtration and no preservatives added along the way.
It’s an elegant, spicy, finessed style of Shiraz. Built on a lean frame but oozing charisma. Low intervention winemaking coming up trumps here. Beautiful wine all-round.
Only 100 dozen made.
What It Tastes Like
It’s cool, it’s slippery, it’s tucked in nicely. Hung meat and some savoury notes to the nose amongst a basket of berries and licorice all sorts. Blueberry and white pepper. Slinky, sandy tannins. Great flow and feel. Rustic but classy sort of sums it up.
92 points. “Sort of a meaty/gamey thing going on in bouquet but there’s tar/coal, dark berry fruit, whiffs of ripe plum, yet a freshness in green herbs, briar and undergrowth savouriness too. A tremendous perfume. The palate is soft yet ribbed with corduroy tannins. It’s mulberry and blue berry fruitiness with more of the earthy-savoury stuff going on, and, as per the aromas, some leafy, herbal things too. It’s so easy to like, fine, long and flavoursome, with a vitality and depth that says something. It says drink the hell out of me, but we’ve got touchstones of fine wine here.”
- Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
I could not resist taking some Syrah fruit from this beautiful biodynamic vineyard in Mt Barker when it was offered.
Whole cluster carbonic maceration wine making, elevage was in old French barrels (mixture of puncheons and barriques), sent to bottle without any filtering, fining and with no additions or added sulphites.
Bottle Size: 750ml

About the Producer
Gentle Folk are another of the young brigade redefining the Adelaide Hills wine region. In winemaker Gareth Belton’s words, “We don’t like to define our styles or winemaking techniques, we just make wine in the way we feel is right for the grapes and season and most importantly, with maximum drinkability and enjoyment in mind.” the wines are naturally made but remain refreshing and crowd-pleasing, and considering their tiny production are excellent value.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
