- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Gareth Belton is a winemaker who creates by feel. Never bound by the constraints of tradition, his wines tell a unique story of the plots he farms throughout the Adelaide Hills.
This wine comes from his Scary Gully vineyard in the Basket Range region. A mad blend of white varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay, this is less about variety than it is about a complete picture.
It’s a slightly orange/golden wine with a delicious flavour combination of salty, briney characters and crisp, citrussy acidity. A little wild and insanely charismatic, the Gentle Folk Scary Gully White is an experience like no other.
What It Tastes Like
Puff of perfume showing white and purple flowers, lemon oil, salt and lime. There’s a pang of mouthwatering citrus flavour that combines savoury elements with a lemony/grapefruity/salty theme. It’s almost oilly in texture but pulls back and tightens with a soft grip through the finish. Super more-ish. Thought-provoking yet smashable.
90 points. “A blend of white grapes from the wonderfully named Scary Gully vineyard. Skin contact gewurz and riesling wild fermented in a couple of iterations (varying time on skins, various vessels) find themselves combined and co-fermented to get to the final cuvee. From Gareth Belton’s hands.
Crazy orangey colour. Juicy as. Wonderfully textured white-ish wine of lemon tea, ginger and a starburst of squeaky acidity in a sluice of cool, limey, mandarin juice. Whip crack refreshing and joyous drinking. This is good for what ails our love of day time drinking, sunshine and fresh things on our plates.”

About the Producer
Gentle Folk are another of the young brigade redefining the Adelaide Hills wine region. In winemaker Gareth Belton’s words, “We don’t like to define our styles or winemaking techniques, we just make wine in the way we feel is right for the grapes and season and most importantly, with maximum drinkability and enjoyment in mind.” the wines are naturally made but remain refreshing and crowd-pleasing, and considering their tiny production are excellent value.
The Adelaide Hills may be the most energised wine region in the country. The sense of exploration and creativity amongst the tribe of talented young winemakers in this region is unparralelled. The Hills has become crucible of Australian wine talent, offering an array of varieties, from classics such as Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, to new varieties like Nebbiolo and Grüner Veltliner for the younger generation to play with. Every vintage brings new colour and complexity to the rich wine, food and produce culture of this cool climate region.
