Barney Flanders takes his Pinot Gris pretty seriously. He treats it very similar to the Rose with wild yeast ferments and six months on lees in barrel but it’s not a big, rich, blousy style. This is tightly wound, textural Gris with complexity that doesn't compromise its drinkability. This received 92 points from Cambell Mattinson who said this year, "It’s all quite scrummy, really." and he's dead right. Great fruit from some very good vineyard sources and made with intent.
What it Tastes Like
"It smells sweet with fruit but it quickly turns more serious. This is pinot gris with attitude. Nectarine, dry pear, brine and wheat-like characters charge through the palate, slowed only by a gentle grippiness through the back half of the wine. It’s all quite scrummy, really." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Garagiste is the brainchild of Barnaby Flanders. After leaving Allied Wines in 2003 he embarked on a mission to produce small batch premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under his own label in his beloved Mornington Peninsula. Barney loves the sub-regionality to be exploited in Mornington Peninsula, the slight alterations in aspect and soil profile within this small wine producing region provide him with the scaffolding around which he builds his stunning harem of small batch wines. They are only ever made in small quantities so time is of the essence if you want to explore the world of Garagiste.
The Mornington Peninsula has become a go-to destination for lovers of modern Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mornington’s perfect climatic conditions for producing these varieties has seen it become, in only a relatively short time, one of the premier regions for these varieties in the country. The wines are beautiful. The best examples are wines which show a restrained power. Both intensity and elegance. It’s a region which will continue to blossom and mature for many years to come.
Pinot Gris is a variety that can take on many forms. In one instance it’s crisp, racy and light as in the case of Pinot Grigio, the next it’s round and voluptuous, and sometimes it presents as pinkish or even red! This versatility makes it an incredibly interesting grape. It loves skin contact, it loves lees stirring, it loves anything a winemaker can throw at it, but always it will show lovely perfume, tasty fruit and excellent mouthfeel. It might just be the most underestimated white variety in the country.
