- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
No Italian-inspired winery would be complete without a Prosecco, so here is Brian Freeman's. This is made from vines only a couple of years old, but regardless, this is a pretty serious Prosecco. Freeman wanted to do something in the same vein as the classically Italian style of this wine. Prosecco has a reputation of being sweet and simple, this is neither of those things. In it's past it has been one of the highest rated Australian Proseccos and this vintage is on song. A step up for Australian Prosecco, to be sure.
What it Tastes Like
Surprisingly dry, lean and minerally. Still a bucket load of flavour, all lemons and pears with a mouthful of mousse. Long, persistant crunchy/mineral finish. This is some pretty serious gear. Flat out bargain.
2015 vintage: 94 points. "Another excellent release. Brian Freeman packs the flavour into his prosecco, without resorting to overt sweetness. This release is all citrus and bran, custard and cooked ripe pears. It builds and builds with flavour but then, ultimately, refreshes." - James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)
VINTAGE This delicate dry sparkling wine is a fitting addition to the Italian inspired Freeman portfolio. A hectare of the home Altura vineyard was planted in 2011 to two clones of the traditional Italian variety Prosecco, with the intention of producing an authentic expression of the grape most commonly associated with the Veneto region of northern Italy. These relatively young vines have adapted remarkably well to their cool climate hilltop site, as this excellent 2016 harvest attests. The ripe grapes were handpicked in early February and gently pressed prior to the initial fermentation in stainless steel vats. Subsequently, half was barrel fermented and lees stirred to contribute complexity and a creamy texture to the wine prior to its secondary tank fermentation – known in Italy as the ‘Metodo Martinotti’ – or more commonly as the Charmat process. Minimal dosage prior to bottling under pressure and cork has created a dry, lightly effervescent and vivacious style that mirrors its European origins. TASTING NOTES A pale colour with grapefruit tinges FREEMAN Prosecco 2016 displays a persistent fine dry, creamy effervescence and classic citrus and pear aromas. Soft and yet sprightly on the palate with flavours of crunchy pear complemented by a smidge of creamy yeast complexity and delicate acidity, it refreshes to the very last sip….

About the Producer
Freeman Vineyards was established in 1999 by Dr Brian Freeman, previously the Professor of Wine Science at Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga, in the Hilltops region of New South Wales. It boasts some unique varieties in the Hilltops region, a true pioneering producer of NSW.
This is one to watch. The Hilltops in NSW has some huge potential. The high altitude vineyards in this region are producing some of the most epic cool climate Syrah/Shiraz and Cabernet on the market at the moment. With a relatively low profile (for now), the value to be had in this area is second to none. But get in quick, the word is getting out and it wont be that way for long. Love yourself the more refined side of Shiraz? The Hilltops is a place you really need to check out.
