- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Flor Marche are making waves in the Great Southern. Searching out unique vineyards, treating the fruit with respect. Giving value and interest to the drinker with a keen eye on aesthetics and punter-friendly wine styles. It's a very promising operation run by Skigh and Elizabeth. Their Malabre Riesling is a slightly more 'serious' wine then their value-packed sub-$20 range of wines. It's made from a single vineyard in Mount Barker, built for intensity as well as approachability. A tiny amount of residual sugar (9grams/litre) keeps the palate from being too unforgiving as a young wine yet the length and steeliness from the vineyard shines through. Mike Bennie gave this vintage 91 points calling it "delicate, pure, sweet and tart together." Another super value release from this rising producer. Only 100 dozen made.
What it Tastes Like
"It dances on the palate, feels at once mineral water dashed with sweet lime cordial and something more sophisticated. It’s delicate, pure, sweet and tart together. It’s a wine for knocking back with gusto two seconds after you’ve wiped the bottle down for skerricks of ice out of the chiller. It stretches out on the palate well, then finishes with a drizzle of ripe lemony pucker. Just yum." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
91 points. "Flor Marche has quietly gone about making their presence felt over numerous vintages. The Great Southern-winemaking duo of Elizabeth Reed and Skigh McManus are responsible for this range of wines. They source fruit from several vineyards in the great, wide, dappled expanse that is this isolated region. I believe this wine is from a single vineyard, and it feels like there is a judicious, low level volume of residual sugar left in the wine. 2014 MALABRE The 2014 Malabre Riesling was sourced from a single vineyard in the Mount Barker subregion of the Great Southern, Western Australia. The fruit was hand picked, gently pressed and fermented at 15oC. We like to press the grapes to extract a small about of phenolics which we believe contributes to mouthfeel and texture. At the end of ferment we continued to taste the wine to determine the perfect balance between acid and sugar. When we were happy with this level of balance we chilled the wine to stop ferment. Final analysis showed as that residual sugar was 9g/L/ A small amount of SO2 was added before bottling. 100 dozen produced | 12.5% alc/vol
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
All the work is done in the vineyard, you shouldn’t need to make additions if you pick at the right time.
At least, that’s the thinking of Elizabeth Reed and Skigh McManus of Flor Marchè. Their eye-catching, naturally made wines are some of the more intriguing creations coming out of Western Australian wine at the moment.
This young duo are making a splash as they, along with their contemporaries, bring natural wines to the forefront of Margaret River and Great Southern wine.
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Riesling is the king of white grapes. With unparalleled versatility, it rightfully carries the ‘Noble’ name tag. We make extraordinary Riesling in Australia, from far and wide. From the classic searing, razor-sharp styles in the Clare and Eden Valleys to the fragrant and enchanting wines of the Great Southern, Australian Riesling is a chameleon that can take on many forms. Sweet, steely, lean or textured, the world of Riesling is a thing of wonder that should be explored by all true lovers of wine.
