- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
A little skin contact is very 'in' in Pinot Gris these days. And with wines like this being churned out, it's no wonder. This release from Yarra Valley up-and-comer, Tony Fikkers, is full of the charms that come with cleverly made Gris. He pressed the wine as whole bunches straight to old barriques, a portion hanging out as full berries for 10 days before being pressed. It's fermented wild, treated gently and bottled with minimal filtering or fining. It's a pure expression with a little more complexity than most of the 'classic' styles of this variety seen around. And most importantly, it's near impossible to put down.
What it Tastes Like
Slight pinkish hue that looks so inviting. Smells of fresh pink apples, a little poached pear, soft spice and almond meal. Little grip to the palate makes for lipsmacking drinking. Perfect for spring.
92 points. "Like texture here. Firm, chalky, bright in acidity, white pear, nashi pear, like the length of flavour." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
Grown on a 15-year-old vineyard inSeville East, Yarra Valley. Soils are red/brown clay loam on a gentle East facing slope. 2016 was early due to warm dry weather and was crazy fast as every variety seemed to ripen at the same time! There was no problem getting the grapes ripe, just finding the time to get everything into the winery.
Closure: Screw Cap
Bottle Size: 750ml
About the Producer
Fikkers is the one man operation of Yarra Valley winemaker Anthony Fikkers, and it’s a name we will be hearing much more of. Working with a range of local growers, Fikkers is all about small batch, hand made wines made in unique styles and with minimal intervention. You won’t see the wines on many store shelves because there just aren’t enough of them, but they are absolutely worth trying and add enormous variety to the Yarra Valley landscape.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Pinot Gris is a variety that can take on many forms. In one instance it’s crisp, racy and light as in the case of Pinot Grigio, the next it’s round and voluptuous, and sometimes it presents as pinkish or even red! This versatility makes it an incredibly interesting grape. It loves skin contact, it loves lees stirring, it loves anything a winemaker can throw at it, but always it will show lovely perfume, tasty fruit and excellent mouthfeel. It might just be the most underestimated white variety in the country.
