- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The excellent value in the Express Winemakers range continues here from young Ryan O’Meera.
This is made from one of Ryan’s longest standing vineyard partnerships, a site right on the Southern tip of WA. It produces distinctive Shiraz flavours - meaty, gamey yet with vibrant fruit flavours.
It’s makes for great drinking with some interesting points of difference to its South Australian varietal counterparts.
Mike Bennie summed it up nicely in his 93 point review, “Just love it. Stacks of personality.”
What It Tastes Like
“Game meat, feral stuff, earth and briar, currants, black olives. Wild styles. Love it. Washy in the palate then tightens through a web of tannins. Sophisticated yet pure feel, peppery, spicy, lingering mescal finish. Just love it. Stacks of personality.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

WINEMAKING One of my longest serving parcels of fruit, from the Montgomery Hill vineyard in the Albany sub-region of the Great Southern, about as South as it gets on this side of the country. 110% Whole bunch ferment, or I could just be bad at maths. TASTING NOTE Light purple in colour, with intense aromas of white pepper, red berries, wood smoke, tomato leaf, orange peel, cardamom and violet among other things, which pounce out of the glass. Some of these aromas and flavours are characteristic of Great Southern Syrah others more unique to this vineyard. The palate has a delicious generosity to it, the flavours are bright and the texture and acidity are seamless.

About the Producer
Express Winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Pedro haven’t been around all that long. 2011 was their maiden vintage, but in that short amount of time they have made a lot of friends. Their wines focus on “balanced vineyards from around Western Australia’s Great Southern region with unique character”, and they are a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and funky WA producers reinventing the west!
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
