They have sourced the fruit for this tasty Tempranillo from a vineyard in Mount Barker planted back in the late 1990s. The cool climate of the deep south in WA doing wonders for this Mediterranean variety. All things considered, this is a stonkingly good buy.
It's everything you could want in cool-climate sub-$30 Tempranillo. It's spicy and juicy, a plush version of a medium bodied red. A tasty Tempranillo for all occasions.
What it Tastes Like
Sweet red and purple berries, red mulberry and some sweet licorice. It's smooth and silky with meaty tannins that are seasoned with spice. Never gets bigger than medium bodied but keeps sweeps of tasty flavour flowing through the mouth. Great drinking Tempranillo.
Tempranillo planted in the late ‘90s by Plantagenet Wines. These grapes were fermented with a small portion of whole bunches, for a short period before being basked pressed directly to old oak barrels.

About the Producer
Express Winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Pedro haven’t been around all that long. 2011 was their maiden vintage, but in that short amount of time they have made a lot of friends. Their wines focus on “balanced vineyards from around Western Australia’s Great Southern region with unique character”, and they are a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and funky WA producers reinventing the west!
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
Tempranillo is a hot-blooded Spanish variety that has found a happy home in many Australian wine regions. Typically, Tempranillo will be medium bodied, showing silky darker fruits and tannins riddled with exotic spices. The wines are more-ish and incredibly well suited to alfresco Australian dining. Unsurprisingly, Tempranillo is one of the country’s most popular emerging varieties and is set to have a big future on Australian shores.
