- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
A tiny portion of Malbec from the famed Forrest Hill vineyard piqued Ryan O'Meara's interest after moving into his "new digs" just a fence-hop away. He managed to purchase a little, and with gentle hands has crafted a very interesting wine for lovers of this mercurial Bordeaux variety. The fruit was destemmed then, some bunches re-introduced to add some complexity and tannin development. It makes for an interesting combination of smoky and meaty aromas with vibrant primary fruit. Great stuff. Ryan only made a small amount, and it won't be around for long.
What it Tastes Like
Plums, licorice, smoky-woodfired oven scents. It's dark to the core but there's some vibrant red fruits on the fringes, which gives it a sort of push-pull fell. Thick ropes of dry tannin wind through the palate. It finishes with a savoury kick to the finish. Good value for Malbec lovers.
Malbec from the famous, dry-grown Forest Hill Vineyard, just over the fence from my new digs. The grapes are destemmed, with some stalks being added back to the ferment. Pressed off after a few days fermenting on skins, directly to old oak. Deep, opaque purple colour, with a nose that is dense with its own unique spicy character along with ripe, dark forest fruits. The palate is not as heavy as the nose may suggest, with mulberry, plum, fruit cake and menthol characters. The gravelly tannins find a balance with the soft natural acidity and it winds up with a surprisingly savoury finish.

About the Producer
Express Winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Pedro haven’t been around all that long. 2011 was their maiden vintage, but in that short amount of time they have made a lot of friends. Their wines focus on “balanced vineyards from around Western Australia’s Great Southern region with unique character”, and they are a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and funky WA producers reinventing the west!
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
