Coming from one of the oldest vineyards in the Frankland River region of southern WA the fruit has real purity and intensity, with extra texture and interest added in through wild yeasts, some time in older oak and a small amount of residual sugar.
Nicely made wine from excellent fruit and all-around fun drinking.
What It Tastes Like
“Guzzle with impunity. It’s floral, flighty perfume of lemonade, orange peel, lemon sorbet. Palate is kin to melted lemon sorbet without the overt sweetness, just a kiss of the sugar then light nuttiness and tart acidity peel the wine away. It’s fine, fresh, steely, good. Gooder than good. This wild-fermented, unfined or filtered wine comes from the sandy granitic soils of one of Frankland’s oldest vineyards. A short time on skins and no settling prior to a spontaneous yet extended fermentation have leant some crunchy phenolics and plenty of distinctive flavours.

Express Winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Pedro haven’t been around all that long. 2011 was their maiden vintage, but in that short amount of time they have made a lot of friends. Their wines focus on “balanced vineyards from around Western Australia’s Great Southern region with unique character”, and they are a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and funky WA producers reinventing the west!
Frankland River is rapidly becoming one of WA’s most important wine-producing regions. With a cooler climate than Margaret River, it offers amazing scope for the exploration of varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Shiraz. The wines have an elegance and a finesse to them and at this point are remarkably good value. One of the jewels of the Great Southern area that has a big future ahead of it.
