Ryan O'Meara & Pete Pedro at Express Winemakers are making fun wines with a serious edge out of WA's Great Southern region. This red is a great case in point. The Drinking Wine is built for ultimate smashability, a wine to slug down during a casual luncheon or to rip the top off when unexpected friends drop by. It's made from mainly Grenache (some made as Rosé, some as a table wine) with a splash of Malbec to give it a little more body. It's hard to imagine a red wine that is easier to drink. This playful wine came about by accident, as we were pressing off our precious small volume of Malbec, not wanting to waste the intense smelling dry-ish skins I thought it might be a good idea to chuck them in a struggling ferment of some Great Southern Grenache Rose. The result was better than we could have hoped for, the ferment finished and the wine exhibited some of the unique flavours we find in our Malbec combined with a light-bodied prettiness from the Grenache. The resultant wine has all the attractive qualities of a joven or nouveau style red wine with additional interest, which keeps you reaching for the bottle. Pretty light red/dark pink in colour with cranberry, sour cherry, violet, spice and menthol characters. The palate is light and lively, with a slurpy texture that is supported by a backbone of chalky tannin and innately drinkable.

Express Winemakers Ryan O’Meara and Pete Pedro haven’t been around all that long. 2011 was their maiden vintage, but in that short amount of time they have made a lot of friends. Their wines focus on “balanced vineyards from around Western Australia’s Great Southern region with unique character”, and they are a terrific example of the ever-rising tidal wave of young and funky WA producers reinventing the west!
The Great Southern is the largest wine region in the country. Though more and more, the label “Great Southern” is becoming redundant. It is the sub-regional exploration of terroir which is distinguishing this region. From Frankland River to Porongorup, from Mount Barker to Denmark, the detailed and stylish wines emerging from these sub-regions are some of the most intriguing in the country. No longer a “poor man’s Margaret River”, whether you love Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz or Pinot, this stunning cool climate region will blow you away with the value and refinement inherent in everything it produces. And the good thing is, it is only getting better.
