- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Ephemera wines are made from interesting small batches of fruit that winemaker Rhen Dodd stumbles across during vintage. They one of a kind, interesting expressions of varieties and sites. This comes from the Chalmers vineyard in Heathcote. It was fermented on skins and aged in old barrels. Vermentino works so well with some thoughtful winemaking, in this case it has really kicked it up a notch. Rhen was very happy with how this has turned out. It's funky, a little wild and simply delicious.
What it Tastes Like
Bit of a skinsy feel here. Bath salts and a plume of talc over lemons and apricot kernals. It's cool and creamy but with some cleansing acid. Little kiss of spice on the finish. Awesome expression, pure and interesting.
92 points "Hazy light gold colour in the glass. Lots of texture, chalkiness, raspy almost, lemon-lime Splice ice block, almond nuttiness, then a herbal zestiness and saline-mineral tang to close. The perfume is pretty green, but in that intriguing way, not over-the-top, just pretty herbs and floral things. Lots of interest, lots of freshness, lots of drinkability in its own, quirky and fascinating way. It’s a wonderful drink, showcasing plenty of vermentino’s personality. Really enjoyable." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

About the Producer
Ephemera is the Project of Rhen Dodd and Janelle De Gabriele. The project aims to be an ongoing exploration of Victorian vineyards, with a lean to sustainable and considered viticulture. There are no fixed regions, and the varietals sourced are ones that we believe are well suited to the region. The wines are made with as little tinkering in the cellar as possible, especially during fermentation. All the wines are fermented naturally and see some time in seasoned barrels for ageing on full solids. Skins and stalks are included in all ferments to varying degrees, as we believe this helps to convey site expression. No fining or filtering is employed.
Heathcote’s reputation is for big Shiraz. And they do it so well. But the times they are a changin’ with Italian varieties such as Fiano, Sangiovese, Nero d’Avola and Sagrantino all finding themselves well at home in the ancient Cambrian soils.
