- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Inkwell have been pursuing a ‘lo-fi’ form of winemaking for a number of years now. Stripping the winemaking process back to basics.
Here, they take their approach one step further with the release of their first Preservative Free Shiraz.
This is McLaren Vale Shiraz grown on a sustainable vineyard sent to bottle while as fresh as a daisy with absolutely zero additions including sulphur.
No fining, no filtration. Just pure free-wheeling juicy Shiraz in a perky modern style. It works particularly well with a bit of chill so don’t be scared to pop it in the fridge when the mercury starts to rise.
What It Tastes Like
Sweet perfume of plum, violets and spice. Cherry ripe sweet/sour combination in the mouth. Some fine grained tannins from oak and fruit give it a nice grounding and boy it sings with a chill on it. Young and exuberant Aussie red - modern Shiraz writ large.
94 points. “Deep, youthful, vibrant colour, clear and bright. Intense, dark-berry, fruitcake and spice aromas which are far from raw and simplistic. The wine is medium-full bodied and very approachable with soft tannins and balanced acidity. The wine has great drinkability despite its youth and the fact that it’s not light and callow or nouveau-like. PF means no preservative (sulphur dioxide) added, and it ticks all the boxes for a ‘natural’ wine.”
- Huon Hooke
90 points “Attractive, easy drinking right here. Bursts outta the glass with a jumble of currants and berry jubes, dusting of mocha. The palate is ripe berry pure and fresh, brisk in its flavour stain on the palate, finishes with an attractive crispness. Washy, delicious, casual drinking personified. Hard not to skol the glass. Yum.”

About the Producer
Husband and wife duo Dudley Brown and Irina Santiago-Brown of Inkwell wines in McLaren Vale, are true advocates of sustainable farming practices and are self confessedly “fanatical about (their) vines and wines.”
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Long held up to the rest of the world as Australia’s flagship red variety, the mighty Australian Shiraz has undergone something of a renaissance over the past two decades. While our robust styles of Shiraz from powerhouse South Australian regions such as the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale may have put Australian wine on the map, Shiraz from our cooler regions are giving the variety a new look. Wines from Canberra, all parts of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills, and the Great Southern, are all delivering wines of finesse and spice set to a lighter framework. The tapestry of Australian Shiraz is richly diverse, and will only continue to develop and mature into the future.
