Just when you thought Margaret River was becoming a little predictable (predictably good, mind you), along come new producers like Dormilona. Current Young Gun of Wine winemaker, Jo Perry, strives to create "amazing quality wines from organic & biodynamic fruit with no additives and very little intervention." Amen. So onto this wine, an organically farmed Chenin Blanc from a small vineyard in Willyabrup, Margaret River. Jo and her viticulturist partner Jim have got their priorities right, focusing first and foremost on sourcing high quality, pure fruit, before worrying about what to do with it in the winery. The fruit is hand-picked and whole bunch pressed straight into barrel for wild ferment, where it sits on its lees before being bottled with no fining or filtration. It's a lovely, unique expression of this controversial variety, and if you love your whites with a bit of texture and oomph, and this will be right up your alley.
What it Tastes Like
Really jumps out of the glass with bright citrus, vanilla, and a bit of peaches and cream. More exuberant apples and lemons on the palate with razor sharp acid balanced by some nice, soft creaminess. Hints of toast and honey too. Fascinating drinking!

Interestingly, this week an independent panel (including me) was asked by Wine Australia to show Ken Ohashi MW (journalist, importer, educator in Tokyo) a line up of wines. No less than four Western Australia (two from Tripe.Iscariot, this wine and Express Winemakers) chenin blancs appeared out of the 50-odd wines… Savoury scents show blanched almond, light oatmeal, brown lime, alpine floral scents. Just lovely. Crispy-crunchy texture, saline tang, stretches over a good length and finishes with limey tang. Josephine Perry is one of the most exciting emerging producers in Margaret River. Her Dormilona label is setting a new tone for the region. She is focusing on sourcing organically and biodynamically grown fruit, making wine with as little intervention as possible, and bringing an alt-styling to the hero varieties of this famous region.
