- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
The Yarra Valley is pretty flush with good Chardonnay at the moment. The region is in a purple patch and has been lauded internationally for being the engine room of the Australian Chardonnay revival.
There are plenty of options if you are looking to spend $40 and above, and likely you will be pleased with your choice, but finding a Yarra Chardonnay at $20 that still gives you that rush can be a much trickier proposition.
With Chris Bendle’s experience winemaking not only at Hoddles Creek but in Tasmania, NZ and the States, he is no slouch when it comes to producing quality Chardonnay. As Mike Bennie noted in his 92 point review of the 2016 vintage of the DCB Chardonnay there’s “Excellent value here.”
Chardonnay has no right being this delicious at this price.
What It Tastes Like
“Lemon curd, faint honey, fresh stone fruits, nougat. Soft in the palate and really refreshing. Fine and frisky, good length, flinty notes, faint chalkiness in texture. Excellent value here.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
93 points “Given the quality, this is one of the bargains coming out of the Yarra Valley. No shortage of flavour with a compilation of white stone fruit, freshly grated Granny smith apple, ginger powder with softish acidity. A gentle wine, long on the finish and lots to like.”
- James Halliday (Australian Wine Companion)

About the Producer
f you want to know how to make cracking Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for a great price, the one guy you probably want to learn from is Hoddles Creek’s Franco D’Anna. So that’s just what Chris Bendle did. He’s been making wine at Hoddles since 2010 and something is definitely rubbing off on him. There are strings of DNA that the two brands share; namely freshness, approachability and excellent value.
The Yarra Valley stands tall as one of the country’s finest cool-climate wine regions. Only a short jaunt from Melbourne, the Yarra has become a tourist hot-spot for its stunning scenery, high quality produce, and of course, as the home to some of the country’s most iconic wine producers. From the extraordinarily elegant Cabernets and Syrahs that populate the ‘Valley floor’, to the precise and complex versions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that hail from the higher climes of the Yarra, this region is diverse and in a state of change. As temperatures rise and phylloxera infiltrates each pocket of the Yarra Valley, the range of alternative varieties from continental Europe is sure to increase to create a more colourful picture of the region. The Yarra embodies so much of what is great about the modern Australian wine scene.
Australian Chardonnay is a seductive variety that comes in all shapes and sizes. From the toasty and voluptuous to the lean, flinty and minerally, there is a Chardonnay out there to suit everyone. Australia’s developing prowess with this variety has been marked by the international community with wine writers such as Jancis Robinson marvelling at the outstanding value to be had right across the country. The prestige brands of Margaret River offer wines of deep flavour and power, often crafting fuller-figured Chardonnay of outstanding quality. The cooler-climate wines from the Yarra Valley, Tasmania and the like are more focused and linear, building complexity around a backbone of pristine acidity. Whatever your preference, there is an Australian Chardonnay to enchant all comers.
