Ever keen to try new things, for Rollo Crittenden the Oggi B is his chance to play around with alternate winemaking styles. This is a blend of Fiano and Arneis fermented on skins in an attempt from Rollo to make his own version of 'amber' wine. It's not the full-blown orange style, more of a happy medium of varietal character and freshness but with the additional mouthfeel that is picked up from time on skins. It's a delicious drink with a little extra interest if you want to look for it.
What it Tastes Like
Fiano dominant nose of apples and pears, honeysuckle and beeswax. It's got lovely smooth mouthfeel and plenty of fruit weight in the palate. Acidity is the key here, it keeps this wine on it's tip toes. A freshening through the back end of the wine. It's tasty stuff.
On the back of the success of our initial OGGI release in 2012 we have decided to extend the experimentation of skins fermentation with traditional Italian whites. We selected three varieties that are all fairly textural and basically made them like a red wine. Wild yeast fermented in open vats for two weeks before being pressed to old barriques. The wine then spent 10 months in the same barrels on gross lees before being blended and bottled with minimal filtration and a small SO2 addition.

The Mornington Peninsula has become a go-to destination for lovers of modern Australian Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Mornington’s perfect climatic conditions for producing these varieties has seen it become, in only a relatively short time, one of the premier regions for these varieties in the country. The wines are beautiful. The best examples are wines which show a restrained power. Both intensity and elegance. It’s a region which will continue to blossom and mature for many years to come.
Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country. It makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris which is far better suited to the Australian climate.
