- The Home of Artisan Australian Wine!
Crawford River has always marched to the beat of its own drum. While Riesling is what the Thomsons are best known for, this unique rosé has a cult following of its own.
Unlike the growing trend to make rosé from Mediterranean varieties like Grenache, Sangiovese and Tempranillo, this comes from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. There aren’t many Cabernet-based rosés around these days, but this just works.
The Thomsons explain that this is “made from the ground up” to be a serious, dry, textural rosé. Sounds obvious, but the fact still remains that so many Aussie rosés are made as an afterthought from left-over, declassified fruit. Crawford River’s is a lovely Rosé - very unique in style - and a no-brainer for the warmer months.
What It Tastes Like
“Pretty, floral-meets-raspberry scents. Kind of simple in perfume, but enticing. Feels like a riesling lovers rose. Racy, squeaky-textured, barely there red fruits, citrussy acidity underlying. All of it at an even, brisk pace. It’s very refreshing and shows plenty of lean, appealing red fruit character. Tasty stuff.” - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
92 points. “Pretty sure Crawford River’s rose is made from their cabernet sauvignon. Would make sense, anyway. Rarely a foot wrong at Crawford River. Pretty, floral-meets-raspberry scents. The Crawford River vineyard lies at the alluvial edge of a volcanic lava flow. The 11.5 Ha vineyard has its roots in an unusually complex, mineral-rich soil base. Gravelly, friable, basalt loam overlays permeable clay which in turn lies above a limestone base created by an ancient, risen seabed.
Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are the two main varieties in the vineyard, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
All major activities such as picking, pruning, leaf-plucking, shoot-thinning and green pruning are done by hand.
Our vineyard is maintained without the use of herbicides nor insecticides. We use organic practices and have a bio-dynamic test plot that Belinda has prepared and has planted with Riesling in the Spring of 2014.
For those who know our usual style of Rosé the 2016 is definitely ready to go. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and “made from the ground up”, the fruit is soaked for several hours on skins before being gently pressed and the resultant juice fermented to dryness. Bottling took place in the middle of September & we believe it is now ready for Spring & Summer drinking.

About the Producer
Crawford River is very much a family operation, with the talented Thomson clan celebrating their 40 year anniversary in 2015. Riesling is what they are most famous for, with a range of releases and styles placing them as one of the country’s premier producers of the noble variety. A unique winery with small batch wines that just must be experienced.
Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the truly Nobel grapes. An inherently structural variety, Cabernet when handled gently can produce majestic wines of grace and beauty that mature gloriously with time in the bottle. Australian Cabernet runs the full gamut of style: from lighter, more finely boned versions from regions such as the Yarra Valley, through the exquisitely complex and firm wines of Margaret River to the intensely powerful wines from the Coonawarra, there is much to explore in the world of Australian Cabernet Sauvignon.
