Boasting the country’s first commercial release of this variety, Coriole have developed an affinity with Fiano and year-in-year-out turn in an excellent example.
The 2016 is in fine form. Rated 95 points by James Halliday and 93 points by Gary Walsh, this is a tasty, textural, versatile white perfect for all occasions. A brilliant wine however way you dice it, and undoubtedly one of the country’s premier Fianos.

Pulpy lemon laced apple flavours, almost chalky texure with some raw almond, crunch of acidity (though not too much) and dry and saline finish offering a pleasant amount of gustatory bitterness. Yep. Fiano was selected by Mark Lloyd when looking for a new southern Italian variety to grow in McLaren Vale. The first Australian Fiano was released by Coriole from the 2005 vintage.

Coriole is a McLaren Vale instutution. One of the first in the country to expreiment with alternative varieties, they are true trailblazers of the industry and one of our favourite producers.
The South Australian region of McLaren Vale is famous for its powerful red wines. Shiraz and Grenache have thrived for years in the Vale’s sandy soils. Nowadays, the region’s varietal diversity has majorly increased, the coastal location and warm climate proving perfect for a new wave of varieties from Italy, Spain and Portugal. The success of varieties such as Nero d’Avola, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, and Fiano has transformed McLaren Vale into one of the country’s most vibrant wine scenes. It’s where tradition meets innovation and it is producing some of the Australia’s finest wines.
Fiano is one of the most promising emerging white varieties in Australia. It’s a variety that likes to be warm and dry, exactly the kind of variety that is perfectly sustainable in Australia. Characterised by fresh fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and a lovely, slightly waxy mouthfeel, Fiano is a variety that is prospering across the country. It makes a great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris which is far better suited to the Australian climate.
